Explore how Australia’s population has changed over time through interactive visualisations built from selected Australian Bureau of Statistics data.

The Australian Population Dashboard is an interactive Power BI report built using publicly available data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. It enables users to explore population trends across Australia, states and territories, including population growth, births, deaths, overseas migration and interstate migration.

The project covers the end-to-end analytics process, from sourcing and combining seven years of quarterly Excel reports through to data transformation, dimensional modelling, DAX measure development and interactive dashboard design. It also addresses practical reporting challenges such as managing different reporting periods, preventing double counting and controlling how visuals interact across national and state-level views.

The project demonstrates an end-to-end approach to transforming publicly available data into a clear, interactive report that supports exploration and insight. It combines Power BI, Power Query and DAX with data modelling, problem solving and effective data communication.

Based on data published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics from the National, State and Territory Population collection. Data has been transformed and visualised for demonstration purposes and is used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence.
